Mathematics, science and social studies all have their place in primary school. But every one of them depends on three skills: reading, speaking and writing. A child who struggles to read will struggle with a science question, however bright they are.
Reading opens every subject
In the early grades, children learn to read. From around Grade 3, they read to learn. If reading is not secure by then, every subject becomes harder. That is why we keep a daily reading time in every class, all the way to Grade 5.
Speaking builds thinking
When children explain an idea out loud, they understand it better. Speaking also builds confidence, which shows in every part of school life. Our children speak in front of their friends a little every day, through show-and-tell, class talks and discussions.
Writing shows understanding
Writing in their own words shows whether children have truly understood. We move children step by step from neat handwriting, to writing sentences, to writing short stories and answers of their own.
A little every day
These skills grow through steady daily practice, not occasional big efforts. A little reading, a little speaking and a little writing, every single day, adds up to confident learners.
This approach runs through the whole Happy Buds curriculum. See how it works, or talk to us about using it in your school.
