School readiness is not about reading or writing before the first day. It is about the small, everyday skills that help a child feel confident in a classroom. Here are ten signs to look for.
- Your child can spend a few hours away from you without becoming very upset.
- They can tell an adult when they are hungry, thirsty or need the toilet.
- They enjoy playing with other children and are learning to share and take turns.
- They can listen to a short story and answer a simple question about it.
- They can follow a simple two-step instruction, such as ‘pick up your bag and bring it here’.
- They hold a crayon and enjoy drawing, even if it is only lines and circles.
- They are curious and ask lots of questions.
- They can do small things for themselves, such as washing their hands or putting on their slippers.
- They can sit and focus on one activity for a few minutes.
- They are excited when you talk about school.
Not every box needs a tick
Few children show all ten signs at once, and that is perfectly normal. Teachers in the early years are there to help children grow these skills, gently and step by step.
How you can help at home
Read a story together every day, give your child small jobs they can manage on their own, and arrange time to play with other children. Talk about school as a happy place where they will make friends.
