The summer holidays are a time to rest and play. With a little planning, they can also keep children’s minds active, without any worksheets.
Read every day
Keep the daily reading habit going. Let your child choose books, read aloud to younger brothers and sisters, or retell a story to the family at dinner.
Learning at home
- Cooking together: counting, measuring and following steps
- Shopping: reading labels and counting money
- Planting seeds and watching them grow
- Keeping a holiday diary with drawings and a sentence or two
- Making a scrapbook of a family trip
Games that teach
- Snakes and ladders and ludo for counting
- Word games such as ‘I spy’ and rhyming games
- Puzzles and building blocks
- Card games for matching and memory
Get outside
Visit a temple, a farm, a market or a park, and talk about what you see. Outdoor play builds strong bodies and curious minds.
Keep a gentle routine
Regular meal and sleep times make the return to school much easier in June.
