A good lunch keeps children full of energy for learning and play. It does not need to be complicated. The best lunch box is one your child will actually eat.
What a good lunch box has
- Something filling: rice, chapati, idli, dosa or upma
- Some protein: dal, curd, egg, paneer or sundal
- A vegetable or fruit
- Water in a bottle your child can open
A week of ideas
- Monday: mini idlis with sambar in a small leak-proof box, and a banana
- Tuesday: vegetable upma and a few slices of cucumber
- Wednesday: chapati rolls with dal or potato filling, and an orange
- Thursday: curd rice with grated carrot, and a handful of grapes
- Friday: vegetable pulao with raita, and guava pieces
Tips that help
- Pack small portions; you can always add more.
- Cut food into small, easy pieces for younger children.
- Let your child help choose and pack their lunch.
- Avoid packaged snacks, sweets and fizzy drinks.
- Check the lunch box after school: an empty box tells you what works.
