The first day of school is a big step for children and for parents. A little preparation helps everyone feel calmer.
In the week before
- Talk about school in a cheerful way, and walk or drive past it together.
- Move bedtime a little earlier so mornings are not rushed.
- Practise opening the lunch box and water bottle.
- Put your child’s name on their bag, bottle and lunch box.
What to pack
- A simple, familiar snack and lunch
- A water bottle your child can open
- A spare set of clothes for younger children
- Anything the school has asked you to bring
At the gate
Keep goodbyes short and warm. Tell your child who will pick them up and when, for example ‘after lunch’. A quick hug and a smile works better than staying a long time. If your child cries, trust the teacher: most children settle within minutes once their parent has left.
After school
Instead of asking ‘How was school?’, try ‘What did you play today?’ or ‘Who did you sit with?’. Expect your child to be tired for the first week or two, and keep evenings quiet.
Give it time
Some children love school from the first day; others take a few weeks. Both are normal. Stay in touch with the teacher and share anything that might help them understand your child.
At Happy Buds, Pre-KG starts gently, with plenty of time to play and settle. Book a tour to see our classrooms before the first day.
