Parents often ask us when their child should start school. Age matters, but readiness matters just as much. Here is a simple guide.
A guide by age
- Pre-KG: around 3 years
- LKG: around 4 years
- UKG: around 5 years
- Grade 1: around 6 years
These ages are a guide, not a rule. Every child grows at their own pace, and a few months can make a real difference at this age.
Ready for Pre-KG?
A child who is ready for Pre-KG can usually stay happily with a trusted adult for a few hours, says a few words to ask for what they need, and enjoys playing near other children. Being fully toilet trained helps, though many children are still learning.
Ready for LKG?
By LKG, most children can follow a simple instruction, sit for a short story, hold a crayon and make marks on paper, and play with other children rather than just beside them.
Ready for UKG?
UKG children are starting to recognise letter sounds and numbers, can speak in full sentences, and can manage simple tasks on their own, such as opening their lunch box.
