Why teacher training matters more than buildings

18 October 2026 · 2 min read

It is tempting to spend on what parents see first: a large building, painted walls, new furniture and smart boards. These have their place. But a child’s day is shaped far more by the teacher in front of them than by anything on the walls.

What a well-trained teacher does differently

  • Notices which child is struggling, and helps before they fall behind
  • Knows how to teach reading step by step, not just repeat the textbook
  • Keeps a class of young children busy, calm and happy
  • Speaks to parents clearly about their child’s progress
  • Turns simple materials into rich learning activities

Training is not a single day

A one-day workshop at the start of the year is not enough. Good schools train teachers before the year begins, visit their classrooms, and keep learning together through the year.

Clear plans support good teaching

Teachers teach best when they have clear lesson plans and the right materials. It frees them to focus on the children rather than on preparing every lesson from scratch.

Where to invest first

If you are building or improving a school, put training and a strong curriculum first. A modest classroom with a skilled teacher will always do more for children than a grand building without one.

Every Happy Buds partner school receives teacher training before and during the year. Find out how we support schools.
