15 minutes a day: building a reading habit at home

18 October 2026 · 2 min read

Children who read a little every day become confident readers. It does not take hours. Fifteen minutes, every day, is enough to make a real difference.

Make it a routine

Choose one time that suits your family, such as after dinner or before bed, and keep to it. When reading happens at the same time each day, children start to look forward to it.

Ideas by age

  • Pre-KG and LKG: picture books, rhymes and books with flaps. Point to the pictures and talk about them.
  • UKG and Grade 1: simple storybooks. Let your child read a few words, and you read the rest.
  • Grades 2 and 3: short chapter books. Take turns reading a page each.
  • Grades 4 and 5: let your child choose, whether stories, comics or books about animals and space.

Read in Tamil too

Reading in Tamil at home is valuable. Children who enjoy stories in their home language find it easier to learn to read in any language.

Small things that help

  • Keep books where your child can reach them.
  • Let them see you reading.
  • Talk about the story: what might happen next?
  • Visit a library, or swap books with friends and family.

Most of all, keep it enjoyable. A child who loves stories will become a reader. See how we teach reading at Happy Buds.
